The farmlands of East Anglia might not be the first place you’d check for a junglist heavyweight. But, when you realise that this is the area that gave us dons like Flytronix, DJ Dominator, Bladerunner, and T>I, you might decide to check your prejudices. Saxxon is part of a dynasty.
As half of Savage Rehab, Saxxon stormed onto the scene with huge tunes for the V Recordings camp like “Rare Groove” and “The Drums”. Since then, he’s scorched a path through a roll-call of labels including Spearhead, AudioPorn, Natty Dub, Propa Talent, Fokuz, and G13.
You see, whatever sub-genre he’s ostensibly working it, Saxxon has very much defined his own sound. Like the original junglist pioneers, jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, tech, and any other style he fancies becomes reconfigured and subsumed into his music. And, given his regular appearances at the top of the download charts, it’s clear his distinctive brand of full-range dancefloor DnB is a hit with selectors and ravers alike.
Saxxon’s steeped-in-the-foundations mindset is even more evident in his deejay sets. His dedication to dubplate culture means that, at any given time, he can draw from over a hundred straight-out-the-vault exclusive tunes and remixes that you’ll never hear anywhere else. And, yaking the quest for inimitability one step further, recently he’s been marrying the visual to the sonic, as he adds video to the mix.
Somehow, he’s still found time to nail down even more music including multiple EPs for the V family, a full-length feature-packed album for Liondub, and multiple releases for the regenerated Trouble on Vinyl. The queue of producers who have lined up to collab, including luminaries like Limited, AK1200, Suv, Kenny Ken, and T>I, is seemingly unending. And that’s before we even get into the array of vocal artists like Azza, Coppa, and T.R.A.C. looking to lace a Saxxon beat.
With production skills and a work ethic to match, no wonder his global deejay schedule is so packed. Taking his place on the Urban Agency roster, leaving a trail of spectacular dub-fuelled deejay sets, classic remixes, and powerhouse solo releases behind him, we can only watch in anticipation for what’s coming next.
